ምርጫ 2007 ተጠናቆ ተወዳዳሪም አወዳዳሪም የሆነው ህወሓት ይፋ ውጤት እስኪገልጽ እየተጠበቀ ነው። ሁሉ በእጁ ነውና ባለሥልጣኖቹ ምን ዓይነት ውጤት እንደሚስማማቸው እስከሚነግሩን ጥቂት ቀናት ይወስዱ ይሆናል። ከፈለጉ ሁሉን የፓርላማ ወንበሮች ሊወስዷቸው ይችላሉ፤ ካሻቸው ደግሞ ጥቂቱን ለተቃዋሚዎች ሊሰጡ ይችላሉ። ወሳኞቹ እነሱ ናቸው። በዚህ የፓርላማ ወንበሮች እደላ የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ድምጽ አንዳችንም ሚና የለውም።

ምርጫ የሕዝብ የሥልጣን ባላቤትነት ማረጋገጫ ከሆኑ አቢይ ዲሞክራሲያዊ ተቋማት አንዱ መሆኑ የታወቀ ነው። ሆኖም ግን ነፃ ተቋማት በሌሉበት፤ በአምባገነኖች አስፈፃሚነት የሚደረግ ምርጫ የመራጮች ነፃ ፍላጎት መግለጫ በመሆን ፋንታ የገዢዎች ሥልጣን ማረጋገጫ መሣሪያ ይሆናል፤ ከአገራችን እየሆነ ያለውም ይህ ነው።

የዘንድሮው ምርጫ 2007 ከዚህ በፊት ከነበሩ በባሰ ለአፈና የተጋለጠ የነበረ መሆኑ ከጅምሩ በግልጽ የታየ ጉዳይ ነበር። በአንድነትና በመኢአድ ፓርቲዎች ላይ አገዛዙ የወሰደው የግፍ እርምጃ የዚሁ የምርጫ ዘረፋ ስትራቴጂ አካል ነበር። ከዚያ በተጨማሪም መራጮች እውነተኛ ፍላጎታቸውን በነፃነት መግለጽ እንይችሉ ዘርፈ ብዙ ጫናዎች ሲደረግባቸው ቆይቷል። የተወዳዳሪ ፓርቲዎች አባላት እንደተፎካካሪ ሳይሆን እንደጠላት ሲሳደዱ፣ ሲታሰሩ፣ ሲደበደቡና ሲገደሉ ሰንብቷል። በምርጫው ሰሞንና በዕለቱ በተለይ ከተሞች በባዕድ ጦር የተወረሩ መስለው ነበር። ይህ ሁሉ ስነልቦናዊና አካላዊ ተጽዕኖ ታልፎ የተሰጠው ድምጽ ቆጣሪው ራሱ “ተወዳዳሪ ነኝ” ባዩ ህወሓት ነው።

በእንዲህ ዓይነት ምርጫ መሳተፍ ትርፉ “በሕዝብ ድምጽ ተመረጥኩ የማለትን እድል ለአምባገኑ ህወሓት መስጠት ነው”፤ “ለዓለም ዓቀፍ ማኅበረሰብም የተምታታ መልዕክት ማስተላለፍ ነው”፤ ”ለህወሓት ተጨማሪ ገንዘብ ማግኛና የኢትዮጵያን ሕዝብ መከራ ማራዘሚያ ነው“ በሚል በዚህ ምርጫ ላይ ማዕቀብ እንዲደረግ አርበኞች ግንቦት 7 ለኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ጥሪ ማድረጉ ይታወቃል። በርካታ ወገኖቻችን የምርጫ ካርድ ቢያወጡም የደረሰባቸውን ጫና ተቋቁመው በምርጫው ባለመሳተፍ ላሳዩት ጽናት አርበኞች ግንቦት 7 አድናቆቱን ይገልፃል።

ህወሓት በስልጣን ላይ እስካለ ድረስ የምርጫ ጉዳይ እና የምርጫ ፓለቲካ ግንቦት 7 ቀን 1997 ዓም የተጠናቀቀ ቢሆንም እንኳን ተጨማሪ ማስረጃ ለሚፈልጉ ግንቦት 16 ቀን 2007 መጥቶላቸዋል። አሁን ከፊታችን የተደቀነው ጥያቄ የሚከተለው ነው – አገራችን ከህወሓት አፈና ነፃ ለማውጣት ያለን አማራጭ መንገድ ምንድነው？

አርበኞች ግንቦት 7: የአንድነትና የዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ ህወሓት ከኢትዮጵያዊያን ጫንቃ የሚወርደው ሕዝባዊ እምቢተኝነትና ሕዝባዊ አመጽን ባቀናጀ ሁሉገብ ትግል ነው ብሎ ያምናል። በዚህም መሠረት ለሁለቱም የትግል ዘርፎች ተስማሚ የሆኑ አደረጃጀቶችን አዘጋጅቷል።

ሕዝባዊ እምቢተኝነት፣ ታጋዩ ከመኖርያ ወይም ከሥራ ቦታው ሳይለቅ በህቡዕ የሚከናወን ትግል ነው። ሕዝባዊ አመጽ ደግሞ ከመኖሪያና ሥራ ቦታ ለቆ መንቀሳቀስን ይጠይቃል። ሁለቱም የትግል ዘዴዎች የህወሓትን ህጎች በመቃወም የሚደረጉ ናቸው። ሁለቱም የትግል ዘዴዎች ድርጅት፣ ዲሲሊንና ጽናትን ይጠይቃሉ። ለድላችን ሁለቱም የትግል ዘርፎች እኩል ዋጋ አላቸው። እናም ከዛሬ ጀምሮ እያንዳንዱ ኢትዮጵያዊ እንደዝንባለውና አቅሙ በሚመቸው የትግል ዘርፍ ይሳተፍ። ሕዝባዊ ኃይልን መቀላቀል የቻለ ይቀላቀል፤ ያልቻለው በያለበት ተደራጅቶ በሕዝባዊ እምቢተኝነት ይታገል።

በየመኖሪያ ሠፈሩና በሥራ ቦታዎች የሚቋቋሙ የአርበኞች ግንቦት 7 ማኅበራት በርካታ ሥራዎች አሏቸው። ከሁሉ አስቀድሞ ድርጅትን ማጠናከር የሁላችንም ድርሻ መሆኑ ሊዘነጋ አይገባም፤ እናም ትኩረታችን እዚያ ላይ እናድርግ። እያንዳንዳችን ከሚመስሉንና ከምናምናቸው ጋር ተነጋግረን እንደራጅ፤ ወያኔ የሸረሸረብንን በራስ መተማመን እና የእርስ በርስ መተማመንን መልሰን እንገንባ። ውስጥ ውስጡን ጠንካራ አገራዊ ኅብረት እንፍጠር፤ የዕለት ተዕለት ተግባሮቻችን ደግሞ አካባቢያዊ ይሁኑ። ድርጅታችንን እያጠናከርን ወያኔን ከሁሉም አቅጣጫ እንሸርሽረው እንገዝግዘው። በዚህ መንገድ በሚደረግ ሕዝባዊ ትግል የሚገኝ ድል ፈጣን ከመሆኑን በላይ የድሉ ሕዝባዊነት ጥያቄ ውስጥ የማይገባ ይሆናል።

ስለሆነም እያንዳንዱ ለውጥ ፈላጊ ኢትዮጵያዊ ታጥቆ እንዲነሳ፤ ወደ ተግባራዊ ትግል ፊቱን እንዲያዞር አርበኞች ግንቦት 7 ጥሪ ያቀርባል።

Special rapporteur on torture asks UK and Ethiopian governments about detention of Andargachew Tsige amid claims of ill-treatment

The detention of a British citizen held on death row in Ethiopia for almost a year is being investigated by the United Nations official responsible for preventing torture.

Andargachew Tsige was arrested last June while in transit through Yemen’s main airport and forcibly removed to Addis Ababa. He is the leader of an opposition party and had been condemned to death several years earlier in his absence.

Juan Mendez, the UN special rapporteur on torture, has written to the Ethiopian and UK governments saying he is investigating the treatment of Tsige. There are claims Tsige is being deprived of sleep and held in isolation.

His partner, Yemi Hailemariam, also a British national, who lives in London with their three children, said she had only spoken to him once by telephone since his abduction. “He’s in prison but we have no idea where he is being held,” she said. “He said he was OK but I’m sure the call was being listened to.

“He had been in Dubai and was flying on to Eritrea when the plane stopped over in Yemen. He hadn’t even been through immigration. We think Yemeni security took him and handed him over to the Ethiopians.

“They say there was an extradition agreement but it was so quick there was no time for any semblance of a legal hearing. Yemen and Ethiopia had close relations then. The [Ethiopian] government have put him on television three times in heavily edited interviews, saying he was revealing secrets

“He has been kept under artificial light 24 hours a day and no one [other than the UK ambassador] has had access to him. I feel angry with the Foreign Office. They know they could do more. They have political leverage they could use but have not done so.”

Tsige, 60, known as Andy, had previously been secretary general of Ginbot 7, a political opposition party that called for democracy, free elections and civil rights. He first came to the UK in 1979. The Ethiopian government has accused him of being a terrorist. In 2009, he was tried with others in his absence and sentenced to death.

No effort was made to extradite him to face the court. A US embassy cable, released through WikiLeaks, described the trial as “lacking in basic elements of due process”.

“[Andy] is a politician, not a terrorist,” said Hailemariam. “It’s just the Ethiopian government that thinks it does not need to make any space for the opposition. A delegation of British MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn, were stopped from travelling to Ethiopia in February. They are hoping to try again.”

Hailemariam’s dissatisfaction with the UK government’s response follows the release of internal Foreign Office memorandums earlier this year that appeared to show official reluctance to apply pressure on Ethiopia to obtain Tsige’s release.

The UK prime minister, David Cameron, has, however, written a letter to his Ethiopian counterpart, Hailemariam Desalegn, raising concerns about Tsige.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “The foreign secretary has raised this case with the Ethiopian foreign minister on 13 separate occasions. We will continue to lobby at all levels, conveying our concern over Andargachew Tsige being detained without regular consular visits and access to a lawyer.”

Maya Foa, director of Reprieve’s death penalty team said: “Andy Tsige was illegally kidnapped and rendered to Ethiopia, where he has now been held in a secret location for nearly a year. The UN special rapporteur is right to raise concerns about torture – especially given Ethiopia’s terrible record on human rights, and their denial of any meaningful consular access.

“It is crucial that the British government now takes stronger action on this case. The way Andy has been treated is in serious violation of international law and the most basic principles of justice – the UK must push for his immediate release.”

Tsige’s lawyer, the barrister Ben Cooper of Doughty Street chambers, said: “[He] was abducted at an international airport, hooded and rendered to Ethiopia, where he has been held incommunicado under a death sentence that was passed unlawfully in his absence. He remains in isolation nearly a year later with only occasional access to the open air.

“His detention violates all minimum standards of treatment. We ask the Foreign Office to follow the lead of the UN special rapporteur on torture to demand an immediate end to Mr Tsege’s torture by seeking his return home to his family in England. This is a clear case of kidnap and should be treated as such.”

Elections are taking place in Ethiopia this weekend. Tsige’s family hopes the government will relax restrictions on the opposition once voting is over.

In a lengthy statement, the Ethiopian embassy said that Ginbot 7 had been proscribed a terrorist organisation by the country’s parliament. Tsige, as general secretary, it added, was charged with “conspiring to perpetrate terror and violence in Ethiopia by planning, training, financing, and organising terrorist recruits in Eritrea” and found guilty of “conspiring and working with and under Ginbot 7, to overthrow the legitimate government of Ethiopia through terrorist acts”.

Following conviction and sentence, the embassy continued, the government sent a formal request of assistance to those states with which Ethiopia has an extradition treaty, requesting them to transfer all sentenced individuals in the event of their presence on their territory.

“It was on the basis of this request, and the existing extradition treaty with the Republic of Yemen, that [he] was extradited to Ethiopia. Accordingly, [he] is currently in detention at the federal prison,” it said.

The statement added: “Mr Tsige was serving as a Trojan horse, assisting the Eritrean government’s repeated and ongoing attempts to wreak havoc and instability in the sub-region. Mr Tsige is well-treated and has received visits from the British ambassador to Ethiopia. He has also spoken to his family on the phone.”

Ethiopia: Onslaught on human rights ahead of elections – Amnesty

The run-up to Ethiopia’s elections on Sunday has been marred by gross, systematic and wide-spread violations of ordinary Ethiopians’ human rights, says Amnesty International.

“The lead-up up to the elections has seen an onslaught on the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly. This onslaught undermines the right to participation in public affairs freely and without fear as the government has clamped down on all forms of legitimate dissent,” said Muthoni Wanyeki, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes.

The Ethiopian authorities have jailed large numbers of members of legally registered opposition political parties, journalists, bloggers and protesters. They have also used a combination of harassment and repressive legislation to repress independent media and civil society.

In the run-up to Sunday’s elections, opposition political party members report increased restrictions on their activities. The Semayawi (Blue) Party informed Amnesty International that more than half of their candidates had their registration cancelled by the National Electoral Board. Out of 400 candidates registered for the House of Peoples Representatives, only 139 will be able to stand in the elections.

On 19 May, Bekele Gerba and other members of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC)-Medrek were campaigning in Oromia Region when police and local security officers beat, arrested and detained them for a couple of hours.

On 12 May, security officers arrested two campaigners and three supporters of the Blue Party who were putting up campaign posters in the capital Addis Ababa. They were released on bail after four days in detention.

In March, three armed security officers in Tigray Region severely beat Koshi Hiluf Kahisay, a member of the Ethiopian Federal Democratic Unity Forum (EFDUD) Arena-Medrek. Koshi Hiluf Kahisay had previously received several verbal warnings from security officials to leave the party or face the consequences.

In January, the police violently dispersed peaceful protesters in Addis Ababa during an event organized by the Unity for Democracy and Justice Party (UDJ). Police beat demonstrators with batons, sticks and iron rods on the head, face, hands and legs, seriously injuring more than 20 of them.

At least 17 journalists, including Eskinder Nega, Reeyot Alemu and Wubishet Taye, have been arrested and charged under the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation (ATP), and sentenced to between three and 18 years in prison. Many journalists have fled to neighboring countries because they are afraid of intimidation, harassment and attracting politically motivated criminal charges.

Civil society’s ability to participate in election observation has been restricted under the Charities and Societies Proclamation (CSP) to only Ethiopian mass based organizations aligned with the ruling political party.

Amnesty International calls on the Africa Union Election Observation Mission (AU EOM) currently in Ethiopia to assess and speak to the broader human rights context around the elections in both their public and private reporting. It also calls on the AU EOM to provide concrete recommendations to address the gross, systematic and widespread nature of violations of the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly which have undermined the right to participate in public affairs freely and without fear.

“The African Union’s election observers have a responsibility to pay attention to human rights violations specific to the elections as well as more broadly,” said Wanyeki. “The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights protects the right of Ethiopians to freely participate in their government. This right has been seriously undermined by violations of other civil and political rights in the lead-up to the elections.”

የተከበራችሁ እናቶቼና አባቶቼ፤ እህቶቼና ወንድሞቼ እንዲሁም ልጆቼ የምትሆኑ ወጣቶች!!

አገራችን የምትገኝበትን አስጨናቂ ሁኔታ ሁላችንም እንረዳለን። የህወሓት/ኢሕአዴግ ፋሽስቶች ቡድን እየገረፈ፣ እያሰረና እየገደለ በካርዳችሁ መርጣችሁ የምርጫ ድግሴን ካላሞቃችሁልኝ እያለ ነው። እንኳንስ ዛሬ ታዛቢ በሌለበት፤ ታዛቢ እያለም እንኳን ወያኔ የሕዝብን ድምጽ በትክክል ቆጥሮ አያውቅም። ወያኔ ለህዝብ ድምጽ ምንም ደንታ የሌለው የኋላቀር ወሮበሎች ቡድን ነው::

ለስንት አስርት ዓመታት ለወያኔ ባርነት እንገብራለን？ ለሀያ አስምስት ዓመታት ተገዛን፣ ተገደልን፣ ተቀጠቀጥን፣ ታሰርን፣ ተሰቃየን፣ ልጆቻችን በአገራቸው ተስፋ ቆርጠው ሲሰደዱ በበረሀ ንዳድ አለቁ፤ በባህር ሰጥመው ቀሩ፤ በባዕዳን አረመኔዎች እንደከብት ታረዱ፤ ቤንዚን ተርከፍክፎባቸው ተቃጠሉ። ሀይማኖታችን ተዋረደ፤ ባህላችን ረከሰ፤ ታሪካችን ተናቀ። በልማት ስም ወልደን ከከበድንበት ተፈናቀልን፤ አገራችን አደገች እያለ ሕዝብ በኑሮ ውድነት ተሰቃየ። በልቶ ማደር ብርቅ ነው። እንደሙጫ የሚያጣብቀንን ማህበረሰባዊ ትስስር በስልጣን ለመቆየትና ህብረተሰቡን ለመዝረፍ ሲል ሆን ብሎ እያፈራረሰው ነው:: ይኽ ሁሉ አይበቃንምን？ ይኸ ሁሉ አይመረንምን？

ወላጆቼ፣ እህት ወንድሞቼ！ውርደት ይብቃን። የተረገጥንና የተገደልን አንሶን ፍጹም ማንንም ሊያሞኝ በማይችል የለበጣ ምርጫ ወደን የተረገጥን፤ ፈልገን የተገዛን ለማስመሰል ወያኔ የሚያደርገውን ሩጫ እናክሽፈው:: ከፊታችን ያለውን ምርጫ ባለመሳተፍ ምሬታችንን እንግለጽ።

ዛሬ በግሌ እና በአርበኞች ግንቦት 7፡ የአንድነትና የዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ ስም ጥሪዬን አቀርባለሁ። በዚህ ምርጫ አትሳተፉ። የምርጫ ካርዳችሁን ቀዳችሁ ጣሉት። እናምርር። ካላመረርን ለውጥ ሊመጣ አይችልም። ይልቅስ ለማይቀረው የመጨረሻው ትግል ራሳችንን እናዘጋጅ::

አርበኞች ግንቦት 7፣ ከትግራይ፣ ከኦሮሞ፣ ከአፋር፣ ከኦጋዴን፣ ከጋምቤላ፣ ከቤሻንጉል ድርጅቶች ጋር ትብብር በመፍጠር የአገር አድን ኃይል በመገንባት ላይ ነው። እኛ ልጆችህ በብሔርም ሆነ በሀይማኖት አንከፋፈልም። ከትግራይ እስከ ኦጋዴን፤ ከአፋር እስከ ጋምቤላ ሁሉንም የኢትዮጵያ ማኅበረሰብ ያካተተ ስብስብ ፈጥረን በኅብረት አገዛዙን እየታገልን ነው። ይህ ትግል ግን የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ሁሉ ትግል ነው። የትግሉም ባለቤት የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ በሙሉ ነው። ክርስቲያን ሙስሊም፤ ወንድ ሴት፤ ወጣት አረጋዊ ሳንል፤ በብሔርም ሆና በቋንቋ ሳንከፋፈል ሁላችንም ይህን አስከፊ ሥርዓት በቃህ እንበለው።

የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ሆይ！

ይህንን የውሸት ምርጫ ባለመሳተፍ ለለውጥ ያለህን ዝግጁነት አሳይ！ ደግሜ እለዋለሁ – የምርጫ ካርድህን ቅደድ！！！

የጦርና የፓሊስ ሠራዊት አባላት ሆይ！

እናንተ የሕዝብ አካላት ናችሁ። በወገኖቻችሁ ላይ አትተኩሱ። ይልቁንስ አፈሙዛችሁን አገራችንን ለውርደት በዳረገውና በሙስና በተጨማለቀው ዘራፊው የህወሓት አገዛዝ ላይ አዙሩት። ታሪካችሁን ከምታበላሹ፤ ታሪክ ሥሩ። ለራሳችሁ፣ ለቤተሰቦቻችሁ፣ ለልጆቻችሁ እና ለሕዝብ የሚጠቅም አገርና መንግሥት እንዲኖረን የእናንተ የግልም ሆነ የጋራ ተነሳሽነት ወሳኝ ነው። ወያኔ ህዝቡን የሚዘርፈው በእናንተ ትከሻ ላይ ቆሞ እንደሆነ ላንዳፍታም አትርሱት:: እንደመላው ህብረተሰብ እናንተም በነጻነትና በኩራት የምትኖሩበት ሀገር እንደምትሹ አልጠራጠርም:: ስለዚህም ይህን የህወሓት የውሸት ምርጫ ተቃወሙ። ዛሬውኑ ነፃነትና ፍትህ ከጠማው ወገናችሁ ጎን ቁሙ።

የኢትዮጵያ ወጣቶች፤ ትግላችን እስከ ነፃነት ድረስ ይቀጥላል። ነፃነታችንን በእርግጠኝነት በትግላችን እንቀዳጃለን። የምትወዷት፣ የምትኮሩባት አገር – ኢትዮጵያ – ትኖረናለች። ለዚህ ግን ዛሬ ተደራጅተን፣ ፀንተን መታገል የሁላችንም ኃላፊነት ነው። ዛሬ ሁላችንም በፍላጎትና በመንፈስ የተገናኘን ነንና ሁሉም በያለበት ትግሉን ያጧጡፍ። ውጤቱ ቀድሞ በታወቀው በዚህ ምርጫ አለመሳተፍ ለትግሉ ያለንን ቁርጠኝነት ማሳያ ነውና ለውሸት ምርጫ ያለን የመረረ ተቃውሞ በምርጫው ባለመሳተፍ እናሳይ።

በመርህ ላይ በተመሠረተ ትብብር ወያኔን በጋራ ታግሎ ማሸነፍ እና በየደረጃው የሚገኝ የመንግሥት ስልጣን ነፃ፣ ፍትሀዊና ተዓማኒን በሆነ የሕዝብ ምርጫ ብቻ የሚያዝበት የፓለቲካ ሥርዓት መገንባት የአርበኞች ግንቦት 7፡ የአንድነትና የዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ ተልዕኮ ነው። በዚህም መሠረት አርበኞች ግንቦት 7፣ በተግባራዊ እንቅስቃሴ ላይ ከሚገኙት ከትግራይ ሕዝብ ዴሞክራሲያዊ ንቅናቄ፣ ከጋምቤላ ሕዝብ ነፃነት ንቅናቄ፣ ከቤንሻንጉል ሕዝብ ነፃነት ንቅናቄ እና ከአማራ ዴሞክራሲ ኃይል ንቅናቄ ጋር በመርህ ላይ በተመሠረተ ትብብር በጋራ ለመታገል የሚያስችለውን ስምምነት ላይ እየደረሰ ነው።

ይህ የትብብር ጥረት ብዙ ጉዳዮችን ታሳቢ ያደረገ በመሆኑ የኢትዮጵያን ሕዝብ ጠንካራ ድጋፍ ይሻል።

1. ህወሓትን ከስልጣን የማባረር ኃላፊነት የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ የጋራ ኃላፊነት ነው። ይህ ትልቅ ኃላፊነት በአንድ ወይም በጥቂት ድርጅቶች ላይ መጣል የለበትም። ይህ ትብብር ይህንን የጋራ ኃላፊነትን በጋራ ለመወጣት የተደረገ በዓይነቱ አዲስ የሆነ ተግባራዊ ትብብር ነው።
2. ህወሓት በትግራይ ውስጥ መቶ በመቶ ተቀባይነት ያለው አስመስሎ ፕሮፖጋንዳ ሲነዛ ቆይቷል። ህወሓት፣ የትግራይና የአማራ ሕዝብ በጠላትነት እንዲተያዩ፤ የትግራይ ሕዝብ ራሱን ከሌላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ነጥሎ እንዲያይ የረዥም ግዜ እቅድ አውጥቶ ተግባራዊ እያደረገ ነው። ይህን እኩይ ሴራ ማክሸፍ የምንችለው በፀረ-ወያኔ ተግባራዊ ትግል በጋራ ስንቆም ነው። ይህ ትብብር ለአገራችን አንድነትና ዘላቂ ሰላም ወሳኝ የሆነው በፀረ ህወሓት አቋሙ የጠነከረ የትግራይ ሕዝብ እንዲኖር ወሳኝ ሚና ይኖረናል ብለን እናምናለን።
3. በአሁኑ ሰዓት የህወሓት አገዛዝ የቆመው ዘረኛ በሆነ መንገድ ባደራጀው ጦር፣ በስለላ ድርጅቱ እና ኃያላን መንግሥታት ለጥቅማቸው ሲሉ በሚያደርጉለት ሁለተናዊ ድጋፍ ነው። እነዚህ ህወሓትን ደግፈው የያዙ ኃይሎች ጠባቸው ከመላው ኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ጋር መሆኑን በተግባር የምናሳያቸው ተግባርን መሠረት ያደረገ ጠንካራ ኅብረት ፈጥረን ስንገኝ ነው።
4. ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ባለው ነባራዊ ማኅበራዊ ሀቅ ምክንያት ከፓለቲካ አመለካከት ይልቅ በወል ማንነት ላይ የተመሠረቱ ድርጅቶች የሚበዙበት ሆኗል። የኢትዮጵያን ችግር ለመፍታት ሁለቱን አመለካከቶች መሠረት አድርገው በተደራጁ ድርጅቶች መካከል ትብብር መፍጠር ወሳኝ ነው።

አርበኞች ግንቦት 7፣ ከላይ በአጭሩ በተዘረዘሩት ምክንያቶች እየተፈጠረ ያለው ትብብር የኢትዮጵያን የፓለቲካ መልካምድር ወደተሻለ ሁኔታ ለመቀየር የራሱ አስተዋጽዖ ይኖረዋል የሚል እምነት አለው። በዚህም ምክንያት መጠናቀቅ የሚገባቸው ነገሮች ተጠናቀው ትብብሩ በይፋ እንዲመሠረት የበኩሉን ጥረት ያደርጋል።

ከላይ በተዘረዘሩት ምክንያቶች ሳቢያ የትብብር አድማሳችን ከዚህም መስፋት አለበት ብሎ አርበኞች ግንቦት 7 ያምናል። ስለሆነም፣ በተለያዩ ምክንያቶች ለጊዜው የትብብር ማዕቀፍ ውስጥ ያልገቡ የፓለቲካ ድርጅቶች ወደ ትብብሩ እንዲመጡ፤ ለሀገራችን እና ለሕዝብ በጋራ መሥራት በምንችላቸው ጉዳዮች ላይ እንድመክር ጥሪውን ያስተላልፋል። በመመካከር ህወሓትን ማስወገድ ብቻ ሳይሆን ለሁላችን የሚበጅ የተሻለ ሥርዓት በአገራችን ላይ እንዲመሠረት መሠረት መጣል እንችላለን ብሎ አርበኞች ግንቦት 7 በጽኑ ያምናል። ስለሆነም እንነጋገር፤ ለሁላችን የሚበጀንን መንገድ በጋራ እንፈልግ፤ የህወሓት ፋሽስታዊ አገዛዝን በጋራ እንታገል፤ ከራሷ ጋር የታረቀች አገር ጥንስስ እኛው ውስጥ እንፍጠር ይላል።

አገራችንና ሕዝባቸን ማዳን ግባችን አድርገን በአንድነት አንሰራለን።

የአንድነት፣ የመከባበር፣ የመቻቻል እና የነፃነት ምሳሌ የሆነችው አገራችን እኩይ አላማቸውን ለማሳካትና የስልጣን እድሜያቸውን ለማራዘም በሚንከላወሱት የወያኔ ቡደን አገራችንና ሕዝባችን ከምንግዜውም በከፋ ደረጃ ላይ አድርሰዋታል።

ወጣቱ በአገሩ ላይ ተምሮና ሰርቶ የመኖር እድሉ ለወያኔው አገዛዝ ማደር አልያም አገሩን ጥሎ መሰደደ በሆነበት ሁኔታ ውስጥ አገሩን ጥሎ የሚሰደደው ዜጋ ቁጥር ከፍተኛ መሆኑ ብቻ ሳይሆን ለመሰደድ በሚያደርገው ጉዞ ምን ያህሉ በበርሃ እንደሚቀርና የአሳ እራት እንደሆነ የመገናኛ ብዙሃን በሰፊው ሲዘግቡት ቆይተዋል።

በተለያየ አገር በስደት ከሚፈልጉት አገር የደረሱትና የእለት ጉርሳቸውንና ቤተሰቦቻቸውን ለማገዝ ደፋ ቀና በሚሉበት ሂደት ውስጥ በደቡብ አፍሪካ በቁማቸው በአሳት መቃጠል፣ በሊቢያ አይናቸው እያየ መታረድና በጥይት መደብደብ ሆኗል እጣ ፋንታቸው።

እናም አገርና ሕዝብ በእንደዚህ አይነት አስከፊ ሂደት መቀጠል የለበትም የወያኔም የግፍ አገዛዝ ሊበቀው ይገባል በሚል ቀደም ብለን ይህን በታኝ ስርዓት በትጥቅ ትግል እየተፋለምን ያለን ደርጅቶች እኛ አንድ ሆነን ሕዝቡን አንድ በማደረግ አገራቸንና ሕዝባችንን ነፃ ማውጣት የሚገባን ወቅት አሁን ነው በሚል ስርዓቱን ለማስወገድ በሚደረገው የትግል ሂደት በትብብር መስራት አለብን በሚል ውይይት ጀምረናል።

ወደፊት በሚኖረው የትግል ሂደት በትብብር፣ በጥምረት ብሎም በውህደት ለመስራት በውይይት ላይ የምንገኘው ድርጅቶች፡-

1. የትግራይ ሕዝብ ዴሞክራሲያዊ ንቅናቄ
2. የጋምቤላ ሕዝብ ነፃነት ንቅናቄ
3. የቤንሻንጉል ሕዝብ ነፃነት ንቅናቄ
4. የአማራ ዴሞክራሲ ሃይል ንቅናቄ
5. አረበኞች ግንቦት 7 ለአንድነትና ዴሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ

ስንሆን ከሁሉም አስቀድመን አገራችንና ሕዝባችን ማዳን ግባችን አድርገን እንስራ በሚል መርህ በማንኛውም መንገድ አብረን መስራት አለብን ወደ ፊት ምንም አይነት ልዩነት ይኖረናል ብለን ባናምንም በሂደት ወደ አንድ የምንመጣበትን ሁኔታ እያመቻቸን አሁን ግን አገርና ሕዝብን የማዳኑን ስራ እንጀምር በሚል ውይይት እያደረግን መሆናችንን ለመላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ መግለፅ እንወዳለን።

አምባገነኑም የወያኔ ቡድን እንዳለፉት ምርጫዎች ሁሉ በቅርቡ የሚደረገውን የይስሙላ ምርጫ ለማድረግ ደፋ ቀና እያለ ሲሆን በተለያየ አገራት በእናትህ፣ በአባትህ፣ በወንድምህ፣ በእህትህ ላይ ላይ እየደረሰ ላለው ዘግናኝ ግፍ እንኳን ወቅቱን ጠብቆ ተቃውሞውን ያልገለፀ ኢትዮጵያዊ ባህሪ የለሌው እኩይ ሥርዓት በመቃወም ረገድ ከፍተኛ እንቅስቃሴ እያደረገህ ቢሆንም በተደራጀ ሁኔታ እየታገልን ከምንገኘው ተቃዋሚ ድርጅቶች ጎን በመሰለለፍ አስፈላጊውን አስተዋጽዖ እንድታደርግ ለመላው የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ጥሪያችንን እናስተላልፋለን።

አይሲስን ስንቃወም ህወሓትን አለመርሳት!

በአይሲስ በግፍ በታረዱብን ወገኖቻችን የተሰማን ሀዘንና ቁጭት ከፍተኛ ቢሆንም እንኳን ከአዕምሮዓችን መውጣት የሌለበት ሀቅ አለ። ይህ ሀቅ “ያስጠቃን፣ ያሳረደን ወያኔ ነው” ከሚለውም ያለፈ ነው። መረሳት የሌለበት ሀቅ፣ ከአይሲስ የከፋ ጨካኝ በአገራችን የመንግሥት ሥልጣን የተቆጣጠረ መሆኑ ነው።

የህወሓት ፋሽስት ጦር በበደኖ፣ በአዋሳ፣ በሀረር፣ በጋምቤላ፣ በጎንደር፣ በኦጋዴን፣ በአዲስ አበባ፣ በሸካና መዠንገር፤ እንዲሁም በሚታወቁም በማይታወቁም የማሰቃያ እስር ቤቶች አይሲስ እየፈፀመ ካለው የባሱ ወንጀሎች በወገኖቻችን ላይ ፈጽሟል፤ አሁንም እየፈፀመ ነው። ባሳለፍነው ሣምንት እንኳን በሁመራ ወገኖቻችን የራሳቸውን መቀበሪያ ጉድጓድ ቆፍረው በጅምላ ተገድለዋል። በአይሲስና በህወሓት መካከል ያለው ልዩነት አይሲስ ነውረኛና አረመኔዓዊ ተግባሩን በቪዲዮ እየቀረፀ ለዓለም ሲበትን ህወሓት ግን እነዚሁኑ ነውረኛና አረመኔዓዊ ተግባሮችን እየፈፀመ መረጃዎች አፍኖ መያዙ ብቻ ነው። ከዚህ ውጭ ግን ህወሓት ሰዎችን ከነሕይወታቸው ጉድጓድ ውስጥ የቀበረ አረመኔ፣ እኩይ ድርጅት ነው።

ስለሆነም ለዓለም ሰላም ስጋት የሆነውን አይሲስን ስንቃወም የራሳችንን አይሲስ – ህወሓትን – አለመርሳት እጅግ አስፈላጊ ነገር ነው።

በሌላ በኩል ደግሞ ህወሓት፣ የአይሲስን እኩይ ተግባራት ከኢትዮጵያዊያን ሙስሊሞች የመብት ጥያቄ ጋር እና ከዲሞክራሲያዊያዊ ፓለቲካ ፓርቲዎች እንቅስቃሴ ጋር ለማገናኘት እያደረገ ያለው ጥረት ምን ያህል አደገኛ ተግባር እንደሆነ የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ እንዲረዳው ያስፈልጋል። ዓይን አውጣ ሌባ ንፁሁን ሰው “ሌባ” እንደሚለው ሁሉ የኛው አይሲስ ራሱን ንፁህ አስመስሎ ሌሎችን “አይሲስ” ማለቱ ሊነቃበት ይገባል።

ሌላው ተያያዥ ጉዳይ ደግሞ ስለስደተኝነት የሚሰጠው ገለፃ ነው። ህወሓት ለስደተኝነት ምክንያቱ ደላሎች እንደሆኑ ይናገራል። ይህ የጉዳዩን ግንድ ትቶ ቅርንጫፎች ላይ ማትኮር ነው። ህገወጥ ደላሎች ራሳቸው ሊኖሩ የቻሉት ገንዘብ ከፍለውና የሕይወት ሪስክ ወስደው ለመሰደድ የሚፈልጉ ዜጎች በመኖራቸው ነው። ችግሩን በቅንነት ለመመርመር የሚፈልግ “ይህን ያህል ሰው የሕይወት ሪስክ እየወሰደ ከአገር ለመሰደድ ምን አነሳሳው?” ብሎ መጠየቅ እና ምላሽ ማግኘት ይኖርበታል። በሀገር ውስጥ በነፃነት ተረጋግቶ መኖር፣ ሠርቶ የማደግ ተስፋ ቢኖር ኖሮ ይኸን ያህል ሰው የአደጋውን ከፍተኛነት እያየ ለመሰደድ ይነሳሳ ነበርን？ ኢትዮጵያዊው ከስደት ሊያገኝ የሚሻው ምንድነው？ እንደ ወያኔ ካድሬዎች ገለፃ ከሆነ ከስደት ሊያገኝ የሚችለው አገሩ ውስጥ እያለለት ነው ኢትዮጵያዊ የሚሰደደው። ይህ ምን ዓይነት አመክኖ ነው？ ከዚህ የባሰው ደግሞ ስደትንም የእድገት ውጤት አድርጎ የማቅረብ በሽታ ነው። ይህ እውነት ከሆነ፤ ህወሓት ለኢትዮጵያ አመጣሁላት የሚለው እድገት ውጤት ረሀብ፣ ስደት፣ መርዶ፣ እስር፣ ስቃይ፣ ሞት ከሆነ እንዴት “እድገት” ብለን እንጠራዋለን። ለስደተኝነት መብዛት ህገወጥ ደላሎችን ብቻ ተጠያቂ ማድረግ፤ “እኔ ከደሙ ንፁህ ነኝ” የማለት ያህል ነው። በህጋዊዎቹም በህገወጦቹም ደላሎች ውስጥ የወያኔ ሰዎች በቀጥታም በተዘዋዋሪም እንዳሉበት መረጃዎች ያመለክታሉ። ገንዘብ ባላበት ሁሉ የወያኔ እጅ መኖሩ ፀሐይ የሞቀው ሀቅ ነው። የሰዎች ዝውውር የህወሓት አንዱ ከፍተኛ የገቢ ምንጭ መሆኑ የማይታበል፤ በቀላሉ ማረጋገጥ የሚቻል ሀቅ ነው።

አርበኞች ግንቦት 7: የአንድነትና ዲሞክራሲ ንቅናቄ፣ በዓለም አቀፉ አይሲስ አረመኔያዊ ተግባሮች በደረሰብን የመጠቃት ስሜት ተውጠን የራሳችንን አይሲስ – አረመኔውን ህወሓት – እንዳንረሳ ያሳስባል። መቆሚያው ለማይታየው የዜጎቻችን መሰደድ መንስኤዎች የነፃነት እጦት እና የኑሮ እድሎች መጥበብ መሆናቸው እንዳንዘነጋ ይጠይቃል። ንቅናቂያችን እነዚህ ተያያዥ ችግሮች ሁሉ የሚቃለሉት ህወሓትን አስወግደን በምትኩ ፍትህ፣ ነፃነት፣ እኩልነትና ዲሞክራሲ የሰፈኑባት ኢትዮጵያን ስንመሰረት ብቻ ነው ይላል። ለዚህም ደግሞ ሁላችንም በያለንበት የበኩላችንን ተሳትፎ ማድረግ ይገባናል። ሁለገብ ትግል ማለት፤ እያንዳንዱ ከሚመስለው ጋር እየተደራጀ በያለበት ወያኔ ማስጨነቅ፣ ማዋከብና ማዳከም፤ በመጨረሻም በጋራ ትግል ማስወገድ ማለት እንደሆነ ልብ እንበል። በሁለገብ ትግል ለውጥ የሚመጣው ሁሉም እንደ አቅሙ

በሚያደርገው ተሳትፎ በመሆኑ፣ የሚቻለንን በማድረግ የለውጥ ጠባቂ ሳንሆን፣ የለውጥ አምጭ አካል እንሁን ይላል።

የቁልቁለቱን ጉዞ እናስቁም፤ ውርደት ይብቃን!!!

የህወሓት አገዛዝ ፋሽስታዊ ባህርያት እያደር መረን እያጣ፤ ነውረኛ እየሆነ መጥቷል። በአሳለፍነው ሣምንት ብቻ እንኳን አስነዋሪ ይዘት ያላቸው ሁለት ፋሽስታዊ ክስተቶችን አስተውለናል።

አንዱ በምርመራ ስም በታሳሪዎች ላይ የሚደረገው አሳፋሪ ሰቆቃ ነው። በገላቸው በሚያፌዙና በሚሳለቁ ተቃራኒ ፆታ መርማሪዎች ፊት ለሰዓታት ተመርማሪዎች ራቁታቸውን እንዲሆኑ የሚደረግበት እና እየተፌዘባቸው የሚደበደቡበት ሥርዓት መኖሩ የጉዳቱ ሰለባዎች ይፋ ሲያወጡ እፍረቱ ለመርማሪዎቹ ብቻ ሳይሆን ይህንን ጉድ ተሸክመን ለኖርነው ኢትዮጵያዊያን ሁሉ ነው። በተለይም ደግሞ እንዲህ ዓይነት ክብረነክ ሰቆቃ በሴቶች ላይ እየተፈፀመ መሆኑን ስንሰማ አገራዊ ውርደቱ ያሸማቅቀናል። እንዲህ ዓይነቶችን በሰው ስቃይና እፍረት የሚዝናኑ ጉዶችን ተሸክመን የምኖር መሆናችን ሁላችንን ያዋርደናል። ይህንን አስነዋሪ “የምርመራ ዘዴ” ያጋለጡት የዞን 9 ብሎገሮች፣ ጋዜጠኞችና ፓለቲከኞች ክብርና ሞገስ የሚገባቸው ጀግኖች ሲሆኑ የተዋረዱት እነሱ ሳይሆኑ እኛ ኢትዮጵያዊያን መሆናችን ሊሰማንና “ውርደት በቃ” ልንል ይገባናል።

ሁለተኛው አሳፋሪ ድርጊት ደግሞ ወገኖቻችንን በግፍ ባረደው አይሲስ በተሰኘው አሸባሪ ድርጅት ላይ የህወሓት አገዛዝ የተለሳለሰ አቋም ወስዷል ብለው ራሱ ህወሓት በጠራው ሰልፍ ላይ ተቃውሞዓቸውን ባሰሙ ወጣቶች ላይ አገዛዙ የወሰደው የኃይል እርምጃና ከዚያም ወዲህ እየተደረገ ያለው ነገር ነው። አገዛዙ ለፕሮፖጋንዳው ይጠቅመኛል ብሎ በጠራው ሰልፍ ወጥተው ተቃውሞዓቸውን የገለፁ ወጣቶች በአሰቃቂ ሁኔታ ተደብድበዋል፤ በጅምላ ወደ እስር ቤቶች ተግዘዋል። የአገዛዙ ካድሬዎች ወገኖቻችንን የፈጀውን አይሲስን በመቃወም ፋንታ የራሱ የህወሓትን ውል አልባ ህግ አክብረው በመንቀሳቀስ ላይ ያሉትን ሰማያዊ ፓርቲ፣ ኢትዮጵያዊያን ሙስሊሞችን እና አረና ፓርቲን እየወነጀሉ መሆኑ አጅግ አሳፋሪ ነገር ነው። የአይሲስን አረመኔአዊ ድርጊት ከኢትዮጵያዊያን ሙስሊሞች የመብት ጥያቄ ጋር ለማገናኘት በህወሓት የደህንነት ቢሮ አማካይነት እንቅስቃሴ መጀመሩ እየተሰማ ነው። ለወጣቱ በብዛት መሰደድ በምክንያትነት የሚያቀርቡት ደላሎችን መሆኑ አላዋቂነት ሳይሆን በተገኘው አጋጣሚ ሁሉ ቅራኔው በኢትዮጵያዊያን መካከል እርስ በርስ እንዲሆን ያለመ መሠሪነት ነው። ከዚህም አልፎ የትግራይ ወጣቶችን ነጥሎ በመሰብሰብ “ትምክህተኞች ሊበሉህ ነውና ታጥቀህ ሳይቀድሙህ ቅደም” እያሉ መቀስቀስ በመንግሥት ደረጃ የእርስ በርስ እልቂትን ከማደራጀት ተለይቶ አይታይም። የሥርዓቱ ይሉኝታ ቢስነት የደረሰበት ዝቅጠት ገላጭ ከሆኑ ነገሮች አንዱ “እስከምርጫ መጨረሻ ድረስ ልጆቻችሁን አስረን እናቆይላችሁ” እያሉ ወላጆችን እስከመጠየቅ መድፈራቸው ነው።

ከላይ በአጭሩ የተዘረዘሩት ኩነቶች የሚያረጋግጡት ህወሓት የተማከለ አመራር አጥተው መንገድ የጠፋቸው፤ ሆኖም ግን እጃቸው ውስጥ የገባው ስልጣንና ሀብት ላለማጣት ምንም ነገር ከማድረግ የማይመለሱ አውሬዎች ስብስብ መሆኑ ነው። እንዲህ ዓይነቱን የአውሬዎች ስብስብ የሚገዛው የህግም ሆነ የሥነ-ምግባር ገደብ የለም። ህወሓት እስር በርሳችንን አባልቶ አገራችንንና ሕዝቧን ወደ ማንወጣው አዘቅት ከመክተቱ በፊት ራሱ ህወሓትን ማስወገድ እና በምትኩት ፍትህ፣ ነፃነት፣ ዲሞክራሲና እኩልነት የሰፈነባት ኢትዮጵያን መገንባት የዚህ ትውልድ ኃላፊነት ነው። ይህ ካላደረግን አሁን በወህኒ ቤቶች የሚደረገው ዜጎችን ልብስን አስወልቆ የማዋረድ አስነዋሪ ተግባር ነገ በአደባባዮች የማይደረግ ስለመሆኑ ምንም ማረጋገጫ የለንም። ይህ ትውልድ ኃላፊነቱ ካልተወጣ ህግን አክብረው ከአገዛዙ የተለየ ሀሳብ እናራምዳለን የሚሉ ወገኖቻችን በሙሉ አደጋ ውስጥ ናቸው። በህወሓት መሠሪ ተግባራት ሳቢያ በክርስትናና እስልምና እምነት ተከታይ ኢትዮጵያዊያን መካከል ያለው መግባባት እንዲሻክር እየተደረገ ነው። ዜጎችን በማዋረድ የሚደሰት አገዛዝና ለመዋረድ የፈቀደ ሕዝብ እስካለ ድረስ የቁልቁለቱ ጉዞ መጨረሻ የለውም። ይህንን ማስቆም ያለብን እኛ ሁላንችንም ነን። በአደባባይ መደራጀት ሲከለከል በምስጢር መደራጀትን መልመድ የኛ ኃላፊነት ነው። የኢትዮጵያ አርበኞች ድል መታሰቢያ በዓልን ስናከብር ከቀደምቶቻችን ልንወርስ ከሚገቡን እሴቶች አንዱ ለክብራችን ዋጋ መክፈል ያለብን መሆኑን ጭምር ነው። የኢትዮጵያዊያን ክብር በወያኔ ሲዋረድ እያየን ዝምታን ከመረጥን ከዚህም የባሰ እንዲመጣ መፍቀዳችንን እንወቀው።

Anniversary of the Arrest of Ethiopia’s Zone 9 Bloggers and Three Journalists

Tomorrow, April 25, marks one year since Ethiopia arrested six Zone 9 bloggers and three other journalists. These nine individuals—Befekadu Hailu, Zelalem Kibret, Atnaf Berhane, Natnael Feleke, Mahlet Fantahun, Abel Wabella, Asmamaw Hailegiorgis, Edom Kassaye, and Tesfalem Waldeyes—joined 10 other journalists already imprisoned in Ethiopia, bringing the total number of jailed journalists in Ethiopia to 19, including two Eritrean nationals. This is more than any other country in Africa. In July 2014, Ethiopian authorities charged the six bloggers and three journalists with terrorism under its Anti-Terrorism Proclamation. Their trial is ongoing. Ethiopia also charged one other Zone 9 blogger—Soliyana Shimelis—who was out of the country when her colleagues were arrested, with terrorism, in absentia. Soliyana has been unable to return to Ethiopia and, along with dozens of other Ethiopian journalists, now lives in exile.

Restrictions on press freedoms are inconsistent with the rights outlined in the Ethiopian constitution. Space for media, civil society organizations, and independent voices and views are crucial for democratic progress, development, and economic growth. While we recognize a judicial process is underway, we urge the Ethiopian Government to release journalists and other individuals imprisoned for exercising their right to freedom of expression, particularly those imprisoned who may merit humanitarian release on medical grounds. We urge Ethiopia to refrain from using its Anti-Terrorism Proclamation as a mechanism to curb the free exchange of ideas.

The United States’ irresponsible praise of Ethiopia’s regime – The Washington Post

ETHIOPIA’S ELECTIONS, scheduled for May 24, are shaping up to be anything but democratic. A country that has often been held up as a poster child for development has been stifling civic freedoms and systematically cracking down on independent journalism for several years.

It was consequently startling to hear the State Department’s undersecretary of state for political affairs, Wendy Sherman, declare during a visit to Addis Ababa on April 16 that “Ethiopia is a democracy that is moving forward in an election that we expect to be free, fair and credible.” The ensuing backlash from Ethiopians and human rights advocates was deserved.

Ms. Sherman’s lavish praise was particularly unjustified given Ethiopia’s record on press freedom: It has imprisoned 19 journalists, more than any other country in Africa. According to a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the country ranks fourth on its list of the top 10 most censored countries in the world. At least 16 journalists have been forced into exile, and a number of independent publications have shut down due to official pressure.

Last weekend marked one year since six bloggers were arrested and jailed without trial. The “Zone 9” bloggers, who used their online platforms to write about human rights and social justice and to agitate for a democracy in Ethi­o­pia, were charged with terrorism under the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation, which has been used to clamp down on numerous journalists critical of the regime. Today, the bloggers remain imprisoned, awaiting what will likely be a trial by farce.

As for the elections, opposition parties say the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front , led by Hailemariam Desalegn, has undermined their efforts to register candidates for the May vote. Since last year, members of opposition parties and their supporters have been arrested and harassed. In March, the sole opposition leader in Parliament said he would not run for reelection due to state interference with his party’s affairs. The EPRDF, which has been in power since 1991, was reported to have won the last elections in 2010 with 99.6 percent of the vote.

The State Department released a statement last week urging Ethiopia to release journalists who have been imprisoned for doing their jobs. But as the considerably more high-profile statement by Ms. Sherman indicated, the Obama administration has been reluctant to criticize what it regards as a key security ally in the Horn of Africa. A State Department spokeswoman confirmed this week that Ms. Sherman’s comments “fully reflect the U.S. government’s positions on these issues.”

With its ancient culture, strategic location and population of 94 million, Ethi­o­pia is indeed key to the future of eastern Africa. But that does not justify make-believe statements or a go-softly approach that is not working. The United States should stop funneling millions of aid dollars to a regime that has continued to choke off the media, hamper the participation of opposition parties and silence its critics. If the election is not judged by independent observers to live up to Ms. Sherman’s billing, the administration should swallow her words — and change its approach.
